Devon .. the English Riviera !!
Devon is the most important and the third largest English provinces, especially at the level of tourism to its south-western geographical location on the border of the beautiful and wonderful Cornwall, Devon is one of the most beautiful and most famous among the rich tourists that seeking examples of Georgian and Victorian England and natural history.
The province includes many of the traditional small coastal and inland towns, also includes a number of major cities such as Exeter in the south, which includes the British weather control center and the coastal city of Plymouth, which played a major role in the British Navy, like many coastal cities at the days of the British Empire.
More importantly, the province has the largest open green area, mostly in England and of course, natural reserves and parks managed by the government, the area known as Dartmoor and its around one thousand square kilometers.
Devon is the only province which includes two shorelines, the first in the north-west to the Bristol Channel and the second in south-east English Channel, surrounded by the most important British provinces such as Cornwall in the west and Dorset and Somerset in the east. Add to that the UNESCO defined two areas in Britain as a humanitarian heritage of mankind, most important of them is the coast of Dorset at East Devon, which is called «Jurassic Coast». This coast with a length of about 150 km and considered to be the fifth most important natural sites in Britain.
Jurassic Coast is a rocky coast includes different geological periods, which helps to understand the geological evolution of the land. The most beautiful natural features of it is the rock Dirdel that is similar to the rock Rosha in Beirut, the beach is the home of fossils science, which began with the famous Mary Anning on this famous beach. And collecting fossils is very important in the science of natural history, some of them back to 250 million years ago. So tourists find a lot of natural history that get them back to millions of years, in addition to the milestones of modern towns, cities and ports, traditional, good weather, hotels, and the small ports of the old and wonderful on the beach.
Recent statistics indicate that the province tourism sector revenues, which actively since the nineteenth century, reached 1.2 billion British pounds per year since 2004, a year with the UNESCO protection started.
Historically, this province has seen the first human settlement on the British island at end of the Ice Age. Scientists believe that the natural protected Dartmoor was inhabited by hunters before 6 thousand years.
The origin of the name back to the Celts who settled in southern Britain before the Roman occupation in 50 DC, the name means «the deep valley». Remained under the Roman military rule for 250 years. Later became – indicate the historical information – a dividing line between the Jumenonia Kingdom of Celtic -collaborating- with the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons Kingdom in Essex (the name of the tribes living in the south and east of England and speaks German). Since that time it was annexed to Essex County in the ninth century.
The province historically was the place of many important events in the history of England, such as invasions by the Normans led by William and the revolution by Birkin Erbak mid-fifteenth century. Add to that the civil war in England and the arrival of William Holland or orange as he called sometimes and the start of what is known as «the great revolution», which established the modern parliamentary system and enacted the rights of individuals in 1688.
In addition to the tourism sector, the province relies on the mining sector, fisheries and agriculture, but in the last period began attracting other sectors such as financial sector after the real estate boom in the nineties, as the economy began to depend on the Exeter and Plymouth in general.
Because Devon has the largest number of streets in the south of England, fit tourists who have their cars or taxis which are cheap to travel and enjoy most of the different regions of the south to the north. Internal zones of Dartmoor National Park, wild and rugged land and some English Victorian and Georgian old large houses. In the south you can see a lot of hills sprinkled with small villages here and there, such as Ivy Bridge, Kingsbrig, Dartmoth, Totanas and Torquay. The East Devon includes the oldest beach resort in Britain, and some towns in the Georgian style. In the north, an ancient agricultural areas with the major towns such as the Great Torrington and Bedford. The edges of the coastal edges are the highest in the country. This is the region bordering the Atlantic Ocean from very wonderful areas for tourists who wish to water skiing because of its abundant wind and strength there such as Bedford Bay Beach. Therefore, the province has an excellent natural wealth in terms of animal and plant, and a high incidence of wild flowers. And some small protected areas (about forty-protected official). The province also produces a wide variety of plants that can not be found in the rest of the island and the British Cornwall in particular, it was the only province in Britain because of high temperatures which sometimes grow olives for commercial purposes. Were also a source of many books on natural flowers and plants since the seventeenth century such as a book (Flora Devoniensis) of Jones Kingston in 1829.
